A Nurse’s Journey to Championing Gender Equality in Healthcare
Clinical Nurse Mohamed Abdurmahman admits he used to treat adolescents and victims of gender-based violence with disrespect.
“I would often argue with them, disrespect them, and ignore any signs of gender-based violence they might have experienced. Adolescents were afraid to talk to me and wouldn’t share what they needed to,” says Mohamed, who has more than 12 years of experience at the Chalenko Health Center in Meta Woreda.
His approach changed completely after attending a transformative training session on adolescent and youth health and gender-based violence. This training is part of the Global Affairs Canada-funded Uplift Her project implemented by CARE Ethiopia.
“Before the training, if a woman came to me with a case of rape, I would gauge her and often assume it was her fault,” he candidly admits. “Now, I approach these cases with kindness, compassion, and without judgment. I make sure to provide the care they need with empathy and respect.
“Now, I listen more, approach each case with empathy, and strive to be a safe space where young people feel comfortable expressing themselves.”
Mohamed’s approach before the training reflected a broader issue in healthcare: a lack of understanding of gender dynamics and the emotional needs of vulnerable groups.
Now he conducts awareness sessions on sexual and gender-based violence and educates patients and colleagues on how to handle sensitive issues with care and understanding.
The training even impacted his personal life.
“Through the training, I learned the difference between gender roles and biological sex,” he says. “Now, I share household chores, help with baby care, and even fetch water. This has strengthened my relationship with my family and created a more supportive environment at home.”
Mohamed’s journey from impatience and misunderstanding to advocacy and empathy highlights the transformative power of education and personal reflection. His story is a powerful reminder that change begins with an open mind and a willingness to learn, grow, and make a difference.
