Challenges in the Sector
The recent updates in terms of climate change mitigation and adaptation, Ethiopia Launches National Determined Contribution (NDC) Implementation Plan in July 2024 to Enhance Climate-Resilient Green Economy. In last year with the Ministry of Planning and Development (MoPD) leadership, assessment was conducted on CRGE implementation gaps and challenges since 2011 and there is a need to revitalize the Integrated Climate Governance.
The assessment identified the following key gaps and challenges on the CRGE implementation:
- Lack of Adequate Planning, Mainstreaming and Implementation Capacities.
- Lack of MRV Protocols and Weak Emission Tracking Capacities.
- Lack of Coherent, Consistent and Comprehensive Climate Change Indicators and Weak Knowledge Management and Communication Systems.
- Weak Intra and Inter-Sectoral Coordination.
- Limited Access to International Climate Finance and Climate Smart Technologies.
- Limited Engagement of Private Sector in The Implementation of CRGE Initiatives and
- Weak Coordination of Non-Government Actors Implementing Climate Change Related Programs and Activities in Ethiopia.
In this regard, to strengthen CRGE implementation, the Ministry of Planning and Development (MoPD) has revitalizes for integrated Climate Governance, which will re-strengthen a unified CRGE Ministerial Committee, chaired and co-chaired by MoPD and Ministry of Finance (MoF); all the technical work specific to CRGE sectors will be integrated and conducted at each relevant government bodies; and the CRGE Development Partners Forum designed to strengthen the role and participation of the development partners in their climate actions and investment in Ethiopia.
